FAQ's on PhD Funding for Food systems and nutrition research

I am over 35 years old, but I fall within the other target groups for the scholarship- either a woman, internally displaced, or having a disability. Can I still apply?

Individuals older than 35 years are not eligible for the UG Nkabom Funded PhD support even if they fall in the other target groups.

 

I have already started the PhD programme at the University of Ghana. Can I still apply?

Yes, this round of awards targets those who have already gained admission to study at the University of Ghana and will be in the third year of their PhD programme in the 2025/2026 academic year.

 

I have begun a PhD programme at a different university, but I meet the other eligibility criteria. Can I still apply?

Unfortunately, this scholarship is only available to students who have been admitted into PhD programmes to the University of Ghana.

 

I am an international student studying crop-science at the university of Ghana can I apply?

Unfortunately, this opportunity is currently open only to Ghanaian nationals who satisfy the stated eligibility criteria.

 

Aside Sustainable Agrifood Systems and Nutrition, which other areas will be considered?

The following areas of doctoral research will be taken into consideration:

1. Agricultural Production

Scope: Focuses on the primary production of crops, livestock, fisheries, and forestry. It includes sustainable farming practices, soil health, and crop management.

Relevant courses: Crop Science, Soil Science, Animal Husbandry, Sustainable Agriculture, Agronomy, Agricultural Economics, Plant Pathology, Livestock Management, Agroecology, and Aquaculture.

2. Post-Harvest Handling and Storage

Scope: Involves the management and preservation of harvested produce to maintain quality and reduce losses.

Relevant courses: Post-Harvest Technology, Food Storage and Preservation, Supply Chain Management in Agriculture, Cold Chain Logistics, Grain Handling and Storage, and Pest Management.

3. Food Processing and Packaging

Scope: Includes the transformation of raw agricultural products into forms suitable for consumption, as well as packaging to protect and extend shelf life.

Relevant Courses: Food Science and Technology, Food Chemistry, Food Safety and Quality Control, Food Packaging Technology, Food Microbiology, Food Engineering and Industrial Processing of Agricultural Products.

4. Distribution and Retail

Scope: Covers the movement of food products from processing facilities to retailers or end consumers. It includes logistics, marketing, and retail management.

Relevant Courses: Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Marketing, Food Distribution and Logistics, Retail Management, E-commerce in Agribusiness, Sales and Merchandising of Food Products.

Food environment policies- procurement, food trade, food labelling, food taxes, food advertisement, etc.

5. Consumption

Scope: Focuses on consumer behaviour, nutrition, dietary patterns, and food accessibility.

Relevant Courses: Human Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Dietetics, Consumer Behaviour in Food Choices, Food Culture and Society, Nutrition Education and Communication, and Culinary Arts.

6. Waste Management and Circular Economy

Scope: Deals with managing food waste, recycling, composting, and creating sustainable systems for resource recovery.

Relevant Courses: Waste Management and Recycling, Environmental Science, Circular Economy in Agrifood Systems, Sustainable Resource Management, Food Waste Reduction Strategies, and Composting and Organic Waste Treatment.

7. Crosscutting Areas

Scope: These areas integrate multiple stages of the value chain, addressing broader issues such as policy, innovation, sustainability, and social impact.

Relevant Courses: Food Policy and Governance, Agricultural and Rural Development, Environmental Sustainability in Food Systems, Innovation in Agrifood Systems, Climate Change and Food Security and Nutrition, International Food Trade and Food Laws, and Gender and Social Inclusion in Food Systems and Business development.
