The Nkabom Collaborative at the University of Ghana has launched applications for its new PhD in Sustainable Food Systems, an innovative doctoral programme designed to develop the next generation of researchers, innovators, and leaders committed to transforming food systems across Africa.

The programme, which welcomes its inaugural cohort in September 2026, offers a distinctive interdisciplinary approach that examines food systems as an interconnected whole. Rather than focusing on a single discipline, students will explore themes spanning the entire food systems value chain, from sustainable production and processing to nutrition, food security, markets, policy, entrepreneurship, climate resilience, and consumption. This systems approach equips graduates to develop practical, evidence-based solutions to some of Africa's most pressing food systems challenges.

A key feature of the programme is its collaborative model of delivery. Doctoral candidates will benefit from mentorship and teaching by a multidisciplinary faculty from the University of Ghana and McGill University, bringing together internationally recognised expertise and diverse perspectives to enrich research and learning.

The programme also reflects Nkabom Collaborative at UG’s commitment to building an inclusive pipeline of African food systems leaders. Scholarships are available to support eligible students, with encouragement for applications from young people, especially women, persons with disabilities, and internally displaced persons. By reducing barriers to advanced education, the programme seeks to ensure that talented researchers from diverse backgrounds have the opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of Africa's food systems.

It is a much needed ingredient to transform Ghana food system landscape beyond agriculture for livelihoods to Food Systems for human development. The program’s Human Development focus makes it an ideal vehicle for developing competencies in food systems for learners who have prior training in disciplines other than agriculture."
